"How do they look it up?," she asked.
"You give them your name and they look for it in the computer. You can tell them you are on the same family pass as Sam," I responded.
"Do you have to do anything else?," she wanted to know.
"You might have to spell your name for them."
Sam asked, "Which name? Maddie or Madeleine?"
Maddie said, "I know how to spell Madeleine. I just spell 'made' and then 'line'."
It occurred to me right then and there that my 9 1/2 year-old daughter did not know how to spell her name. I asked her how she spells her name.
She replied, "M A D E L I N E."
I then had to tell her that no, it's "M A D E L E I N E."
I thought my daughter not knowing how to spell her own name was pretty bad. But it gets worse. Later that night, I was relating this tale to Steve, to which he asked, "Well, how do you spell her name?"

Fortunately, I know how to spell my name. But, I can't say that for everyone in our family. . .
I found out from my own experience that it is best to name a child what you intend to call them, not something that has to be changed, explained, spelled out, etc. on the first day of school. So how did Kaitlin end up k8esk8e? I don't know. Poor Maddie. You threw in the "e" to confuse her didn't you? But maybe it's better to be able to pronounce it correctly than to spell it correctly.
Maddie... Madeleine... hmm....
That is hilarious! Men. That is all I've got to say. :)
