MIM - Most Improved Mother

Okay, so I know it's tacky to toot your own horn, but in light of what I've accomplished in the last year, I must.  I'm celebrating this St. Patrick's Day by giving myself a pat on the back.

Today, I am awarding myself with the Most Improved Mother award. Let's go on a journey to see how this came about.

We have to go all the way back to last St. Patrick's Day. Last St. Patrick's Day, I laid out the kids clothes, told them to get dressed and sent them off to school. This would have been fine if I had given them anything green to wear. When I say anything, I mean the tiniest flower stem, animal on a shirt, stripe, polka dot, even a green tag. None of that. Not even by accident.

I sent a sixth grader, a fourth grader, a second grader and a preschooler out the door without any green. The toddler and I were not wearing any either. I completely forgot. Anyone who has been to grade school knows that no green on St. Patrick's Day is basically suicide.

Even worse. I went to pick up George from preschool and noticed a toddler all decked out in green. You know, the big hair ribbons, green pants, striped green shirt, and a mother all decked out to match. My thought was, "Somebody has too much time." This thought was immediately followed by, "Oh hell, it's St. Patrick's Day!" George survived his ordeal because they weren't allowed to pinch in preschool.

Sam, Maddie and Cara did not fare quite as well. Cara's teacher was kind and told her to wear her jacket all day (which had green on it) and informed the class they couldn't pinch her. She survived, even if overheated. Maddie kept her jacket on all day and lied.  She informed everyone that she had green on underneath her jacket. Sam was greeted first thing with pinches. He didn't know what was happening to him until a girl pointed out that it was St. Patrick's Day. Too honest to lie, he spent the day running from kids at recess.

When they got home, I sheepishly asked them how their day was. Sam replied, "Fine, but it would have been better if I had been wearing green."

This year, I knew I had to do better. I made sure this morning that every child wore green. Max tried to tell me his green shirt was bothering him, but I assured him he would want it. I had to explain to him about the pinching tradition. He was immediately concerned for Crabby, because Crabby is orange. I told him that Crabby would be fine because he had huge pincers. To which he replied, "They aren't real." (The pincers aren't, but apparently, the rest of Crabby is)

So everyone was clad in green. I decided to try to make up for last year. I had planned to make pretzel dogs, so why not dye the dough green? The kids were so excited. I asked Sam to set the table and he came up with the green milk all by himself.

At the end of dinner, Maddie informed me that I did indeed, "make up for last year." Hence, my Most Improved Mother award.

One of my coworkers sent his son to kindergarten today without any green. I told him he's a bad father.

Kudos to you. Although, you have to be careful when you start tooting your own horn. Let's not forget what happened last time you did that, "best damn cook in the family."

Is it any better to be greenless in High School. I think not! I completely forgot it was St. Patty's Day yesterday and when I texted Gary to apologize and tell him at least he has green on his backpack he informed me it wasn't green, it was yellow. By that age he should be reminding me though, right? No MIM award for me. Maybe next year.

Bravo Bravo!! This year I was you last year. Forgot to put green on everyone but the preschooler (school was later so I had more time to wake up). I know you would think that because it is Dave's b-day I would remember, well you would be wrong. Great Job, maybe I can get the award next year.
