Are Our Politicians Completely Out of Touch?

Okay, I normally never get political on a blog, but this is financial.  I've been doing the numbers. Last Fall, Congress voted on a 555 Billion stimulus package.  Yesterday and today, they voted on an 838 billion spending package.  There are close to 306 million people in this country.  Both packages gives each individual a $4555 debt.  And that doesn't include interest. Multiply this by the number of people in my family and that is a $31,888 family debt.  That is ridiculous.  These are not budgets, these are in addition to how much our country already owes.

An additional 2 trillion to save the banks, being talked about today,  would cost each American another $6536.

Currently, there are about 23,256,000 people unemployed in this country.  If this is supposed to help them, why not give them the money.  For the spending packages so far, that would be $59,898 per unemployed person.

Or, the unemployment has increased by 3.6 million since December of 07.  What if we give just them the benefits of the spending packages?  That would be $386,944 per unemployed person since the recession began.

Now, I'm not an idiot.  I know that the spending packages are supposed to help stimulate the economy.  And raw numbers can be worked for whatever side you are looking at.  I'm just saying that maybe our lawmakers (who aren't even paying their taxes) should ask what we want before they decide to put us further in debt.

Thank you congress for my new debt.  Can't wait to pay it off.  And just because the spending bill is transparent, doesn't mean I like everything in it.  650 million for TV vouchers?  And please, let's pass the 2 trillion package.  That would increase my family debt by $45,752.  I could owe Japan (or whoever is crazy enough to be lending America money) $77,640 by the end of this month.

I know not all will agree with me.  Obviously Congress didn't.  But judging by the fact that the government doesn't do anything right, I think this spending bill will have the same effect as the stimulus package did in the Fall.  And look at Wall Street.  Apparently they also agree with me today.

Sharon, you forgot about me and mom. When we run out of money, which wont be long the way things are going, you will have to take care of us too and we are used to living high.
Cheers! DAD

I don't totally agree with everything that is included in the stimulus package and they are trying to rework some things in it, but unemployment benefits are actually in there as well as payroll tax cuts for the lower and middle classes. So, maybe they're not completely out of touch - just part way.
